Magicians with English and Russian subtitles is a 1982 Soviet romantic fantasy musical film directed by Konstantin Bromberg.
In a magical research institute in a small Russian town, talented witch Alyona Sanina is set to marry her beloved Ivan Puhov, an ordinary man with no magical abilities. However, when the jealous Apollon Sataneev spreads a lie that Alyona plans to marry another man, her vengeful boss, the formidable sorceress Kira Shemahandskaya, casts a spell to make Alyona forget Ivan and forces her to accept Sataneev’s proposal. With the clock ticking toward New Year’s Eve, Alyona’s friends and Ivan must fight against the odds to break the spell with true love’s kiss before midnight.
The movie is loosely based on the book Monday Begins on Saturday by the Strugatsky brothers, though it takes creative liberties, turning the story into a romantic New Year’s fairytale.
The enchanting and memorable songs were composed by Evgeny Krylatov, with lyrics by Leonid Derbenyov. The soundtrack remains iconic in Russian cinema.
Valentina Tolkunova performed the beloved romantic ballad Three White Horses.
Larisa Dolina, though uncredited, provided the vocals for the witch Alyona’s singing scenes.
