Day Watch with Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish subtitles is a 2005 Russian dark fantasy action film directed by Timur Bekmambetov.

Serving as the sequel to Night Watch, it continues the saga of the eternal struggle between the forces of Light and Darkness. The story follows Anton Gorodetsky, a weary operative of the Light, who becomes caught in a deadly conflict after his own son chooses the side of Darkness. When the legendary Chalk of Fate — a mystical artifact capable of rewriting destiny — is discovered, Anton embarks on a desperate journey through modern-day Moscow to change the past and avert an all-out war between the supernatural factions that secretly rule the world.

The original Russian title is «Дневной дозор» (Dnevnoi Dozor). The film is actually based on parts 2 and 3 of Night Watch Trilogy author Sergei Lukyanenko’s books, though the title might suggest it follows only the second part.

The film opens with a medieval battle that wasn’t in Lukyanenko’s novel — Bekmambetov added it to show that the war between Light and Dark is ancient and mythic, not just an urban fantasy feud. The sequence set the tone for a world where magic and Moscow coexist.

The film features a cameo by director Timur Bekmambetov himself: he appears on a billboard in one scene.

Konstantin Khabensky (Anton) wasn’t a typical action hero — he played Anton as a tired, lonely man burdened by moral choices. Bekmambetov told him to “look like a detective who’s seen too much” rather than a wizard, grounding the fantasy in realism.

Zavulon (Viktor Verzhbitsky) became one of Russia’s most iconic villains. Verzhbitsky said he imagined Zavulon as “Lucifer with a corporate card” — polite, elegant, and utterly ruthless, ruling the Dark Others from a nightclub like a CEO of evil.

The father-son conflict between Anton and Yegor mirrors the book but is more tragic in the film — Bekmambetov compared it to Star Wars: “a father who failed his son, and the son who chose the dark side.”

The “Chalk of Fate” was Bekmambetov’s invention — it doesn’t appear in Lukyanenko’s original novel. He wanted a magical object that felt deeply Russian: ancient, poetic, and simple, yet powerful enough to rewrite destiny.
