A Young Man

A once-promising former prodigy hits thirty with nothing to show for it but debt, disappointment, and a life falling apart. When he discovers that a millionaire prize is up for grabs in a school competition run by his smug ex-classmate, he decides to pass himself off as a teenager and take one last shot at turning everything around.

One of the film’s more curious behind-the-scenes details is the involvement of Ilya Naishuller. He was one of the producers, and he also appears on screen in a small role as the bank boss. It is a neat crossover, especially since Naishuller is usually associated with much flashier, more kinetic filmmaking than this kind of mainstream social comedy.

The film leans into a very specific millennial-versus-Gen Z comic tension. Russian critics noted that much of its humor comes from the hero being old enough to remember one cultural code while suddenly having to survive among teenagers who speak, joke, and think in a completely different one. That generational mismatch is really one of the film’s main comic engines.

Critics compared the film to a Russian take on 21 Jump Street: an adult posing as a student, but with the comedy rooted less in undercover antics than in burnout, envy, and the fear of reaching adulthood without achieving anything.

The cast is part of the film’s appeal. Alongside Pavel Tabakov and Danila Kozlovsky, the lineup also includes Ingrid Olerinskaya and Danila Poperechny, which gives the film a mix of established screen actors and more contemporary pop-cultural presence.
