The Diamond Arm

An unsuspecting Soviet family man slips on a foreign pier and accidentally becomes the “mule” for an international smuggling ring when criminals hide diamonds in his plaster cast. Believing he’s just recovering from an ordinary injury, he returns home unaware that the gang is now desperately trying to retrieve the contraband, while the authorities secretly enlist him to help expose the operation. The mix-up sparks a chain of comic chases, misunderstandings, and close calls that turn his quiet life upside down.

The film was originally inspired by a real smuggling incident. The idea came to writer Yakov Kostyuchenko after he read a newspaper story about tourists used as unsuspecting couriers for contraband jewelry.

The iconic musical number “Остров невезения” (“The Island of Bad Luck”) was almost cut. Gaidai worried the Caribbean-style song would feel out of place, but it became one of the most beloved musical moments in Soviet cinema.

Yuri Nikulin delayed circus performances to finish the film Nikulin was an active circus clown during production. Filming his scenes required careful scheduling around his live performances — sometimes he rushed from the circus arena straight to set.

The scene where Gorbunkov slips and breaks his arm was inspired by a true story told to Gaidai about a man who fell on a greasy ship ramp and ended up in a cast — which sparked the entire premise of the film.

Mironov not only acted but also performed several iconic musical numbers, including “Песня про зайцев” and “Остров невезения”, which became instant classics and are still associated with his screen persona.

Censors were skeptical about showing a sexually suggestive femme fatale, criminal gangs, foreign travel, and even fashionable clothing — all considered ideologically sensitive. Gaidai fought for nearly every scene to remain.
