Station for Two

Platon Ryabinin, a Moscow pianist, misses his train during a brief stop at a provincial railway station after a quarrel with Vera, a tough but warm-hearted waitress. Stranded in the small town without money or documents, he spends several unexpected days there while waiting for the next train. As Vera gradually learns about the serious trouble awaiting him back home, the two strangers grow closer, and their chance meeting at the station turns into a brief but life-changing connection.

The story was inspired by a real accident. Part of the screenplay was based on a true story involving the famous Soviet composer Mikael Tariverdiev. After a car accident in which a pedestrian died, Tariverdiev took the blame instead of the woman who was actually driving. The legal case lasted for years and deeply affected him, and this real event later inspired the central idea of the film.

The tense scene in which prisoners run back to the camp before roll call was inspired by the story of Soviet poet Yaroslav Smelyakov. In the 1950s he nearly faced severe punishment after oversleeping during a temporary leave from a labor camp and had to rush back to the camp gates before inspection.

The director makes a brief cameo appearance as a railway supervisor, a small tradition he occasionally followed in his films.

The main roles were played by Lyudmila Gurchenko and Oleg Basilashvili, two of the most celebrated actors of the era. Their chemistry and emotionally restrained performances became one of the reasons the film remains beloved decades later.

Before becoming a world-famous director, Nikita Mikhalkov appeared in the film as the charming but unreliable train conductor Andrei, one of the story’s most colorful characters.

The score was written by Andrei Petrov, one of the most respected Soviet film composers, whose music helped balance the film’s mixture of melancholy, romance, and quiet humor.

The film was screened at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, which helped introduce Ryazanov’s work to international audiences.
