Jack Frost

The kind-hearted Nastya is mistreated by her cruel stepmother and sent into the frozen forest, where she encounters magical beings who test her courage and purity. Meanwhile, the boastful young Ivan is transformed by an enchantment that forces him to confront his arrogance. As their paths cross amid enchanted woods, wicked sorcery, and the benevolent watch of Father Frost himself, the two must overcome their own trials to discover kindness, humility, and a destiny that binds their fates together.

At the time of its release, the film became one of the most popular New Year holiday broadcasts on Soviet television and is still shown on Russian channels today.

It’s based on traditional Russian folk tales, particularly the legend of Morozko, a winter spirit who tests people’s kindness and character.

The film’s visual style was heavily influenced by the work of Viktor Vasnetsov and other classical Russian illustrators whose paintings shaped the popular image of fairy-tale Russia.

The film was shot in several picturesque locations, including the Carpathian Mountains and parts of central Russia, chosen for their dramatic winter landscapes.

Costumes were designed using authentic elements of 17th–19th century rural clothing, featuring embroidered shirts, fur-trimmed coats, and traditional kokoshnik headdresses.

The film’s score was composed by Nikolai Budashkin, who blended orchestral arrangements with motifs inspired by Russian folk melodies to create a warm, fairy-tale atmosphere.
