My Friend Ivan Lapshin

Ivan Lapshin, a dedicated police chief in a small Soviet town of the 1930s, tries to uphold justice and decency as the shadow of Stalin’s Great Purge spreads through everyday life. Alongside his close friends, fellow officers, and a visiting actress who briefly brightens their gray world, Lapshin navigates the tension between duty and conscience. As suspicion and fear tighten their grip on the town, the warmth of human connection becomes both a refuge and a silent tragedy in a society losing its soul.

Based on a story by Yuri German, the father of the film’s director Aleksei German.

The film was completed in 1983 but released only in 1985, shortly before perestroika, after several years of censorship delays. Soviet authorities considered it too bleak and politically ambiguous.

The film’s style is often described as “documentary realism” — handheld camera work, overlapping dialogue, and crowded compositions make viewers feel like silent witnesses to real life rather than a scripted drama.

Critics later hailed it as one of the greatest Soviet films ever made; Sight & Sound magazine and Russian film scholars frequently list it among the top 10 Soviet masterpieces.
