Alone with English subtitles is a Soviet drama by Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg, notable for its blend of realism, political commentary, and an evocative score by Dmitri Shostakovich. The film follows Yelena Kuzmina, a young teacher from Leningrad whose dreams of instructing well-behaved city schoolchildren are shattered when she is unexpectedly assigned to a remote Siberian village. Initially reluctant to go, she is shamed into accepting the post after hearing the government condemn those unwilling to serve in rural areas. Upon arrival, she finds herself in a harsh, primitive community dominated by a corrupt local Bey and a complacent Soviet representative. The villagers live off their sheep herds, practice shamanistic traditions, and keep children out of school to work as shepherds, making Yelena’s mission nearly impossible.

Determined to teach, Yelena begins holding lessons in the fields where the children tend the sheep. Her defiance draws the Bey’s ire, especially after he illegally sells the village’s livestock to traders who slaughter the animals. Setting out to report the crime to the regional center, Yelena is attacked, thrown from a sled, and lost in a blizzard. Rescued at the last moment by villagers who finally turn against the corrupt officials, she requires urgent medical attention. Messages to the capital bring an airplane to fly her to safety, and as she promises to return, the final image of the plane soaring over the grim totem of a dead horse stands as a potent symbol of modern progress confronting entrenched tradition.
