Alice Through the Looking Glass with English and Russian subtitles is a 1982 Soviet animated film directed by Yefrem Pruzhanskyi, following Alice’s second fantastical journey—this time through a magical looking glass. On the other side, she discovers a mirrored world where everything is reversed and ruled by the logic of a giant chessboard. As Alice takes on the role of a pawn, she travels across strange lands, meeting talking flowers, living chess pieces, and peculiar characters like Tweedledum and Tweedledee. With each step bringing her closer to becoming a queen, Alice must navigate the curious rules of this bizarre world to reach the final square and uncover what lies beyond.

Like its predecessor, the film was produced by Kyivnaukfilm, a prominent Ukrainian studio known for its artistic and experimental approach to animation. The studio was famous for pushing creative boundaries, often incorporating abstract visuals and intellectual depth into its work.

While closely tied to the 1981 Alice in Wonderland, this film has a noticeably different mood. It explores more structured, chess-themed logic in contrast to the dreamlike chaos of the first film, creating a distinct narrative rhythm and visual language.

The film closely follows Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, staying true to many original scenes while interpreting them through a Soviet lens. Themes of identity, logic, and personal growth are subtly woven into Alice’s journey across the chessboard world.
